In the autumn of 2011 I returned to visit a part of this trek, and discovered that heavy tourism development along the trail changed the area dramatically, making the encounter disappointing. But an exciting visit in the village of Syange left an enjoyable memory after all. I brought with me photos I took at the 1996 trip, and locals started to identify their friends and relatives… In this film we shall visit the village of Syange, try to meet people we have met 15 years before, and compare photos of the village to see how it has changed in these 15 years.

Camp for Free

The best camping is free camping. With fewer services compared to a full service campsite it allows you to enjoy getting back to nature. With less pressure you see more unique areas and features when you camp for free.

There are different ways to camp for free in BC. The first way is using Forest Service Rec sites. Exploring back roads is the second way to do it. The third way is to leave the vehicle at the trail head and travel by another method to the campsite.

The majority of land in BC (81%) is Crown Land. There are over 200,000 kilometers of dirt roads networked across it. This network of roads provides access to a huge area of the province for anyone who wants to take advantage of free camping opportunities.

There are almost 1,300 Forest Service Rec sites maintained throughout the province. Most of them are completely free, although some have small fees. The sites are usually chosen for some sort of reason, be it natural beauty or a local attraction. About half of them are maintained by the Forest Service, local First nations or some other group. The rest of them are user maintained, meaning what you pack in you have to pack out.

You can also use the network of roads to take you to unorganized camping. These sites are often the best ones. The law says you can camp anywhere on Crown Land as long as you don’t stay in one place longer than 14 days. You will find roads leading to lakes, or crossing rivers or meadows that make great camping places. Watch for logging trucks, especially during the week, and try to get off to the side of the road when you encounter one.

Take potable water with you for drinking, or be prepared to boil it. Firewood will be easy to find in most areas of the province unless you’re over the treeline or in the desert country. The huge amount of standing dead bug wood makes it easy to get plenty of dry firewood with a chainsaw. Always be firesafe and make sure your fire is completely out when you leave camp. Forest fires are a huge threat in BC. The danger season for forest fires runs from April through to October in most of the province.

For more adventure leave your vehicle at the road. Hike to a remote spot, or get there some other way. You can also use ATVS or snowmobiles to penetrate deeply into the woods. These modes of transport can get you to really wild areas. The wildlife viewing in such areas is remarkable.

The BC Forest Service has also created some canoe routes and hiking networks. There is a system of trails through the South Chilcotin as well. Some are very amenable to almost everyone but there are some routes that require some experience for self guided expeditions.

Remember to pack out everything that you pack in. Also make sure to properly address sanitation. Use existing fire rings when possible, and try to leave your campsite cleaner than when you arrived. It sucks to find a great place littered with someone else’s garbage. On the other hand, it’s nice to find a camp with a small supply of ready cut wood. Some back country camps are outfitted with some of the heavier articles that make life more comfortable, like frying pans and grills. If you find them in a camp, use them, but leave them when you go.

There is a danger from bears, and other wildlife can pose challenges. Keep your camp clean and be bear aware. It’s a good idea to keep food away from where you sleep, or hung in trees, especially if you’re unarmed or in a small party. Searching for bear spray in the middle of the night while a bear is trying to get into your tent is a memorable experience. In contrast, seeing a bear from camp during the day with a bunch of other people is very different. Common sense is the order of the day. In truth, mind you, you’ll have more problems with mice pilfering food than with bears.

Bushcraft: Your Key to Survival

When Robin Hood and his Band of Merry Men returned to their camp deep in Sherwood Forest after a fight at the Sherriff of Nottingham’s castle, there often seemed to be a deer roasting on a nearby spit. Once you get the hang of bushcraft, a deer-on-a-stick meal will be far easier to achieve , but for most amateurs there are aspects of the basic survival skills to master first.

The good news is that you know more than you believe you do. After all common sense does play a significant role in the art of survival, especially in:

? understanding the patterns of weather

? making sure you don’t set up your camp in areas prone to flooding

? recognising, searching for and preparing wild food

? locating, filtering and storing drinkable water

? understanding more than just first aid

? essential navigational skills

? keeping dry and warm

? recognising different animal tracks

? knowing what resources not to waste

The main concern is to ensure you don’t injure yourself or someone else while setting a trap, crossing a stream, fishing, chopping wood with an axe, preparing food with sharpened knives, walking, or in any sort of accident. There’ll be no A & E to rely on. I recall vividly a member of our party falling down a slope and badly dislocating his shoulder. We were miles from any help in the middle of the Borneo jungle and none of us knew the first thing about basic first aid (or how to re-locate a shoulder!) We got it all wrong and the result was extremely painful for him. Can you imagine how much we were slowed down by this accident? When we reached the Royal Geographical Society base camp near the Mulu Caves in the Mulu National Park some 6-7 days later his shoulder was popped back in quite easily. If only we’d known how!

Courses in bushcraft are the best way to prepare yourselves for what might one day be the real thing. I write in the plural here because each member of the family will learn in their own way from a professionally guided experience in the outdoors. You certainly don’t want the only person that knows anything about bushcraft being the person injured. The survival tips you’ll all learn on the bushcraft course you chose to go on will make a huge difference for you and those relying on your knowledge.

Look for good-quality bushcraft courses in your area. If the nearest course doesn’t really excite you, hop on a train and attend one of Ray Mears ‘ Bushcraft Courses. The experience you’ll gain at this will be worth its weight in any precious metal when you have to perform.

Meanwhile watch every survival programme that offers itself on Television or better still stock up on the essential Ray Mears or Bear Grylls DVD series (and watch them) or their books (and read them) I strongly urge you look at the well-illustrated ‘Outdoor Survival Guide‘ by Hugh McManners.

Finding Snapping Turtle Nests For Conservation

Snapping Turtles are powerful, enduring and delightful creatures that have been around for millions of years. Their evolution occurred earlier than other turtles and their rugged design hasn’t changed since. While the common snapping turtle has a wide distribution and strong numbers, in northern portions of the United States there can be merely 1-5 snappers per hectacre. Numbers within the southern United States can be more promising and have as many as 65 snapping turtles per hectacre. The alligator snapping turtle, on the other hand, is considered threatened and is protected by law in numerous states. The snapping turtle in fact, can lay clutches of 20-50 eggs, but only about 133 of every 1,300 eggs survive to depart the nest. Out of those 133 hatchlings, just 1 will survive to adulthood. Most eggs and hatchlings fall victim to predation within the first 36 months of life, if not before they even hatch. What some groups do is protect the nests and capture hatchlings when they climb out. These hatchlings will then be raised for about 3 years and released to the wild or just transported to the nearest lake safely.

The hardest part of conserving and studying snapping turtle nests is, by far, finding a nest. Snapping turtles lay eggs on dry land, away from flood planes. Often it is about 100-500 meters from the female’s usual habitat, but sometimes it can be up to a mile away. Quite often we have seen these turtle nests in odd placesalong the lines of front lawns, man-made mulch trails, gravel along the shoulder of roads, and even loose gravel driveways. Between lawn mowers, foot traffic, and car tires, these turtles usually are not stacking the odds of survival in their favor. I personally have raised snapping turtle hatchlings that I have found trying to cross 3 or 4 roads to get to a water source that would seem to be a 2 day marathon for the little hatchling.

Locating a snapping turtle nest

*Knowing when: Snapping turtles dig their nest and lay eggs in May and June. If you are stalking for a nest, you need to begin at the begining of May. (We’ll explain in a bit) If you will be scouting for a nest, this can be done through July and August.

*Scouting for a nest: This is the hardest and the most unsuccessful means of finding a nest. This involves pacing the perimeter of a portion of a pond or lake, starting at about 40 yards out and incrementally moving farther from the water. Doing a complete sweep of a section of land, be on the lookout for a circle, about 10 inches in diameter, of loose, tilled up dirt. This is often on high ground in grassy spots, leafy spots, mulch, sometimes slightly recessed. See how this can be difficult? It could be anywhere up to a mile away from water.

*Stalking for a nest: This is time consuming, but can be relaxing and very effective. Right as the snapping turtles are getting ready to begin nesting, simply sit back in your lawn chair and your binoculars and observe turtle behavior at a pond or lake. Spending your evenings observing turtles leaving the water to go on land, you can stay a good distance away and watch the turtle dig the nest. If you can, stick around and see if she begins laying the eggs because sometimes they just dig nests to test out the spot. If it is a backyard pond, ideally you can even get some cameras pointing out the back porch for some of the time you can’t be there observing.

When you know the nesting location, do not dig up the nest unless you are very skilled at taking care of turtle eggs. The embryos adhere to the top side of the egg shell and rolling them over will kill them. Not to mention needing to incubate the eggs even if you do successfully transport them. The safest way for you to capture the hatchlings is to create a fine mesh box that you’ll set over the nest without disturbing it. Starting in mid August, begin checking the mesh cage one or two times a day, everyday. If a few hatchlings emerge, remove them and place the mesh box back over the nest till you are certain that all viable eggs have hatched.

Depending on where you live, you should give some thought to the amount of time that you may find yourself without electricity. Even if you do not purchase your supply all at once, you can buy a bottle at a time and set it aside.As an example, if you live in an area where there are many hurricanes, it may help to have enough fuel to last several days.

Before you are faced with an emergency situation, it will be to your advantage to make sure that you know how to use the propane camping stove safely. This will include determining where you will operate the stove, as well as practicing to make sure that you are familiar with the equipment. If you plan carefully, this and other inexpensive equipment can help you manage an emergency with a minimal amount of stress.As you study the instructions, you may also want to set up a checklist or maintenance schedule in order to make sure that the stove remains in good working order.

Unfortunately, losing electricity can create all sorts of problems. At the same time, a generator is beyond the budget of many homeowners.
